What trigger RA? Options

Hi,

I'm still fairly new having being diagnosed in February this year and I just wondered if anyone may know what trigger their RA to become active? I was asked by my specialist if I'd smoked in the past or had parents who smoked around me as a child to which no was the answer. I have heard that pregnancy can trigger RA but not fully understanding the condition I'm not sure if its just a cell that your born with and if anything actually 'triggers' it!

Louise, hello!

My personal trigger was having a baby - hormones everywhere! Having a cold then viral infection then ra woke from inside me!!
It's something I understand that is in our genes (genetic make up of us), also it could be hereditary.

I have another illness: thyroid.

So our bodies work in mysterious ways!

Hi Louise,

I'm not sure there is a definate answer to this yet?

I was diagnosed with RA a year ago. Information I've seen so far suggests a link with smoking and red meat, and possible response to a viral infection. But I too have never smoked & was not brought up in an environment where people smoked. I haven't eaten red meat since my teens.

There is a strong RA link in my family - on both of my parents sides. Both males and females affected with onset at varying ages. So the trigger remains a mystery to me. Hopefully research may soon be able to shed some light on this for us.

RA is one of a class of auto immune disorders in which the body's immune system goes into overdrive and attacks the body rather than invaders. Mine was triggered by a related auto immune disease, Ulcerative Colities

This is really interesting as I do not really know how mine was triggered. I remember watching a you tube seminar and seem to remember the specialist saying they took samples of bloods from an army camp and went back to the camp x amount of years later and could tell who would have RA!

So is it a gene or t cell you are born with?

Sorry if I sound silly Blushing but after coming to terms with having RA I'm just trying to understand it :-)

I am not exactly sure what triggered my RA but strongly believe that stress can play a big factor. It is something I don't think I will have a definite answer to.

when i was first diagnosed three years ago now .. i went to an NRAS meeting that was at my Hospital.

my Consultant was there as well as both Rheumy Nurses, along with NRAS Representative's and this was a great way of learning so much more about RA than i could have in my initial consultation.

there really was a wide variety of reasons that RA could be triggered, stress was one .. also there were two or three young Mums who developed RA in their pregnancy.

i had wondered if a huge weight loss could cause it as i had lost quite a few stones in 2007 but was under care and control of a good weight loss Clinic but my Consultant said no she really didn't think so. there was also a lot of discussion about RA can run in families.

for me i really don't think there is any clear cut answers,

I wonder if for me it may be a 'harsh' way of my body telling me to slow down & I do get quite stressed at times! I don't think it was due to pregnancy as my children are 7 & 8 1/2 & will probably remain an unanswered question Confused
